One Down, Two to Go

One Down, Two to Go

By Paulee Manich ’18, Hillel Student Board President

At the beginning of every semester (and the end of the Spring) the newly elected Rutgers Hillel Student board meets to learn about all the details of what it means to be a student leader here at Rutgers Hillel. Just last week, the 2017-2018 Board came together to start to work and get to know each other. Personally, I was pretty nervous going into this event. This was my first event I had planned as President, and I had to run it! But, after just 3 hours of meeting, we started to learn to work as a team and planned the first two weeks of our upcoming semester.

Hello! My name is Paulee Manich and I am the President of Rutgers Hillel. I felt that it was about time for me to formally introduce myself to the Hillel community. I am beyond thrilled to have the opportunity to lead our amazing student board during our first full year in our new home at 70 College Ave. This year is going to be big. I have high expectations not only for my board, but for myself as well. And now, after our first leadership day, I feel so confident that this group of students is exactly who we need to fill this building with incredible memories.

I watched as each of them came out of their shell to get to know the board members they may not have interacted with beforehand. I saw their eyes light up as we started filling the calendar for the Fall 2017. And I heard them speak so passionately about why Hillel is important to them when our Executive Director, Andrew Getraer, joined us for dinner. Sometimes, being on the student board is exhausting, and this will be my third year on board. I am not the only veteran member, but hearing our peers talk about their passions only made mine grow. A reminder of why we do what we do from the ones we are working closest with is invaluable.

I can’t say with certainty that the 2017-2018 school year will be the best year Rutgers Hillel has ever seen, because that would be far too presumptuous, but I can say that I know this board will put every piece of their heart and soul into this organization. My largest take away from our first formal gathering as a board was this; we are all here for different reasons and got involved in different ways, but at the end of the day we are all just trying to make a difference in the future of the Jewish community. If all goes well, the tireless effort that we all put into this upcoming year will have an impact that goes much further than Rutgers or even New Jersey. We will work to create experiences within the Rutgers Hillel walls that will stay with students wherever they may go down the road. This is our mission, and I believe that we have the people to do it.

I am so excited for next year, and cannot wait for it to start! Students, please feel free to reach out to me at [email protected] if you ever want to talk about what you want from Hillel. Have an amazing summer RU Hillel!
